There will certainly a renewal of " conver- sations " in high quarters , and naturally the Opposition policy will meanwhile be directed to accelerating the production of the Govern ment suggestions . Thus , with the Ulster ques- tion suspended , the House of Commons has this week been free to continue the debate on the Address , Welsh Disestablishment being the next most absorbing topic . In the House of Lords , the Marconi affair has again come to the fore , but there is no doubt that the public and the majority of politicians of all sorts are thoroughly nauseated , and would much prefer to cease flogging a dead and un- savoury carcase . Good humour , however , is s strong point with the workers of Poplar and Bethnal Green , and an election , moreover , offers ample excuse for a little passing show . The grey streets are gaily decorated with flaring picture - posters and cartoons dealing with every political topic under the sun . The fight is most strenuous in Mr. Master- man's constituency , where the narrow majo- rity and the intervention of a Socialist candidate encouraged the Unionists to make a tremendous onslaught upon the seat . " A Cabinet Minister for Bethnal Green " is the device which stares at one most prominently from the hoardings , and there is no doubt that the sirong personal hold which Mr. Masterman has upon the constituency will be a big factor in the battle at the polls . In Poplar Mr. Buxton has retired on a big majority , and there is less enthusiasm . The great mass of the working - class voters of the constituency , however , are very keen poli- ticians , and during my peregrinations early in the week I found many a grimy but eloquent controversialist keeping groups of excited workers at it hammer - and - tongs at every street corner all through the afternoon and evening . Mr. Thomas Hardy's second marriage to a young wife is especially interesting , writes a correspondent , because of the fact that no . other living fictionist has revealed a greater insight into the mysteries of feminine psycho- logy . His knowledge of the English country girl particularly is nothing short of marvel- lous . An amusing explanation of the novel- ist's almost uncanny understanding of rural female character was given by him to a friend . " How on earth do you manage it ? " he was asked . " You , might almost be a coun- try girl yourself . " " When I was a young Hardy replied , " I used to write love letters for the village girls to the soldier sweethearts in India , and that naturally gave me a good insight into their nature and char- acteristics . " man , Thomas Hardy and His Mother . No doubt Mr. Hardy also owed much of his feminine revelation to the influence of his mother , who died ten years ago at the great age of ninety . The late Mrs. Hardy was a singularly sweet and generous - hearted woman , and many of her son's admirers paid little pilgrimages to her at her old thatched cottage near Dorchester in which she spent nearly the whole of her life . It is indeed an outstanding been a friend of women and a recipient of trait of Thomas Hardy that he has always their confidences . Sir Francis Bertie . It is understood that our Ambassador in Paris , Sir Francis Bertie , will tender his resignation to the King immediately after his Majesty's visit to the French capital in April . There is some talk of Sir Francis becoming Governor - General of Canada , but his Excel leney's present intention , Popular Diplomat . Ald . PREECE expressed his surprise as gathering present on such an occasion , and well as his pleasure at seeing such a large was probably due to the influence and good work of their Chairman . They in Ross knew him , and oftentimes he had to preside over an unruly crew there ( laughter ) , but he did ( Mr. Preece ) that the same influence which it very ably and well ; and it seemed to him There is certainly no lack of ambition in the cbjects of the latest addition to London's innumerable Leagues . Sir Max Waechter , one of the ablest peace advocates of the day , is the moving spirit behind its organisation . He has named it the European Unity League , and defines its object as " the carrying out of the most important social reform . " Agreeing with the ablest students of the armaments question that the problem can only be solved by the concerted action of the nations en- gaged in the present race in army and navy building , Sir Max Waechter believes that the one way to secure this is that the Triple Alliance , composed of Germany , Austria , and Italy , and the Triple Entente , composed of Great Britain , France , and Russia , should be combined in a Sixtuple Alliance . The federa- tion of Europe , confidently declares the memorandum in which the European Unity League is commended to the sympathies of the people , will follow . No charge is made and no obligation placed upon anyone who joins the movement , and it may be hoped that there will be many helpers forthcoming for the initial step by which the League intends to pursue its great ideal . It is the creation of a complete and cordial understanding between Britain and Germany . The march of Time brings many remark- able changes , and I daresay many of us have wondered , at some period or another , exactly to what extent the several ancient trading guilds and companies have any real present- day connection with the industries whose Mercer - Nairne - late Fitzmaurice . name they bear , Few , I think , have the Lord Charles Mercer - Nairne is a name un- slightest connection with the trades nowa- familiar at present to the general public .
