The initiative was taken by Miss Hopkins , who was greatly assisted by the teachers , with Miss Elsie Black as accom- panist , and the venture was a great success . " SAD AFFAIR AT LYDBROOK . THROAT . CONSUMPTIVE SAILOR CUTS HIS Considerable surprise was caused in the vil- lage of Lydbrook when the information be- came circulated that Alfred William Mere- dith , of Upper Lydbrook , had been found with his throat cut . Deceased was a single man , and resided with his parents . Eighteen months ago he invalided was out of the Navy suffering from consumption , and for three weeks past occupied a bed in the kitchen near the window . About 11.90 a.m. on Tuesday his mother left him for a few minutes , and on her return found he had taken a razor from a box in the window and cut his throat . P.C. Weekes , who was sent for , rendered first aid , and when Dr. Bennett arrived he put several stitches in the wound which measured three inches in length . No arteries had been severed , but deceased's condition was such that little hope of his recovery could be entertained , and he died on Thursday . THE INQUEST . The Coroner for the district of Dean Forest , Mr. J. W. Guise , conducted an inquiry into the circumstances which brought about the death of the deceased , who , it transpired , was only 26 years of age . then asked Mr. Parish to address the The year " was thought by the spectators that the Good- rich men would have little difficulty in gain- ing the victory . . • • After the exchanges , however , the Saints rose to the occasion in the manner of defence , and though 22 corners were given against them in this half they succeeded in keeping their goal intact , and the game ended in a goalless draw . In the last few minutes of the game Goodrich were awarded a penalty for hands , but the shot , taken by Maxfield , was saved by Hill amid great applause . This now gives the Kyrle , unless something unforseen happens , the championship of the league for this season . " The teams were : -St . Mary's : F. Hill , goal ; C. Watkins and W. Mr. PARISH said it gave him great plea- sure to meet such a splendid room - full of voters in Llangarron . He had been there before to speak for Col. A. Gardner , and for Mr. H. Webb , and hewas there now fo speak for himself . Capt . Trevor had spoken elo- quently of the Tory game of bluff , and they all knew that the Tories were unable to agree on any policy , and therefore had noth- ing to put before the people of the country but these highly - coloured and impossible tales . The very latest was that there was a split in the Cabinet , and that there would be a General Election next week , or the week after . These elections had been com- ing for a long time , but they could take it from him that there would not be an election until the proper time , that was the spring or early summer of next year . 1914 meant too much for the Liberal Party for them to split , the great measures which the Cabinet had sown and ' tended were now ready for harvest , and that harvest would be reaped . For Ireland it meant Home Rule . The Irish people had waited long and patiently , and now their hopes were to be fulfilled . As Capt . Trevor had said , there was a lot of talk about rebellion in Ulster , but even in Ulster there was a majority re- Goodrich .. turned in favour of Home Rule . For Wales , 1914 meant Disestablishment . For 25 years Wales had sent a proportion of 28 to four members to Parliament in favour of Dises- tablishment , and at last they were to get it . For Great Britain generally ; 1914 meant the continuance of Free Trade , and , as a natural consequence , prosperity . Also it meant a Feb. further advance along the road of Social Re- form , which the Liberal Party had opened up for the easier travelling of the aged , the Feb. feeble , and those who had fallen by the way Mar. in the battle of life . The Tories placed all sorts of obstacles on this road , they were all Mar. against Social Reform . as was shown by their attitude towards Old Age Pensions and March But they were the Insurance Bill . So much for the present , now for the future . This year was to be a time of sowing as well as reaping , the Liberal Party were , already , under the leadership of Mr. Lloyd George , sowing the good seed of Land Reform . Tories had always looked upon the land as their especial care , but they had never had the courage to bring forward a thoroughly good policy . But the Liberal Party had shown courage and ability in forming a Land Policy , and already farmers and labourers alike were loud in their praise of it . Its key notes , security of tenure , for the farmers , and a living wage for the labourer , was what had long been wanted ; it was just and right and necessary , as he would endeavour to explain in the time re- maining at his disposal . A Presiding at the annual meeting of the Yorkshire County Cricket Club at Sheffield Lord Hawke , in proposing the adoption of the report and accounts , said that although the county did not manage to hold the champion- ship , they had done good season's work , especially having regard to the many serious accidents that had befallen their players .
