David slipped the revolver back into his pocket and coolly seated himself . shock of surprise over , he was beginning to realise how much the discovery meant to him . " The impudent attack , as you term it , was occasioned by my desire to discover the identity of the impudent scoundrel who , posing as a wizard , endeavoured to from me and my friends - did , indeed , extort blackmail to the tune of one thousand pounds in one case , " retorted David , sternly , with a note of indignation and resentment in his voice .

He turned on his heel , with a shrug of his broad shoulders , and marched out of the room , passed the attendant without a word , and walked down the stairs . It was only by an effort that he had kept his anger in check , and as he strode along Old Bond - street het was still fuming and tingling , but had the satisfying reflection that his every word had cut to the raw like a lash .
As he reached Piccadilly his arm was sud- denly grasped , and he wheeled round to find his uncle at his elbow .
" Hullo , David , what's up ? " queried Sir Eliot . " Where are you going in such a desperate hurry , and what are you looking so tremendously fierce about ? "
" I believe I was coming to see you - on my way to your house - but I'm not sure , " re- plied David . " I am a bit upset , " he con- tinued , with a laugh , as his uncle gazed at him in bewilderment . " I hardly know where I was going when you stopped me . Let's go to some place where we can talk . I have some- thing to tell you that will surprise you . "
" I have given up the idea , but not because Ruth Vanbrugh has the misfortune to be the daughter of Sir Nicholas , " responded David . " She is the sweetest and best girl in the . world , and I have given up the idea of win- ning her because I am unworthy now - since Fate played such a scurvy trick on me while I slept . I love her still , and shall never marry anyone else . " " My dear David ! " protested Sir Eliot , frowning . " Don't talk nonsense . You are not going to let that unfortunate business spoil your life ? "
" I am going away to - morrow - where I have not yet decided , uncle , but I think I shall try to overtake Mandeville and make for Central Africa with him . I may catch him if I take the overland route . "
" David - oh , dash it all , boy , don't be a fool ! " cried Sir Eliot . " You're not going- David , you're not going to disappoint me going back on me after all ? The last of the Emersons "
" And the first to bring dishonour on the name , " interposed David , bitterly . " If my hands were clean it would be different , uncle , but - well , here goes the last of the Emersons ! I'm sorry . "
" You will think better of it a year hence , " said his uncle , after a long silence , " but I may have answered the roll - call by then . As a matter of fact , David was divided between a desire to do his duty to his uncle , to himself , and to Ruth , and was beginning to wonder as he ate his luncheon in a mechanical , abstracted fashion , whether , after all , he would be doing right in becoming an exile .
He broke off abruptly , suddenly aware of the fact that he was talking loudly and angrily , and dropped into his chair again . " It is too absurd even to think about , " he concluded , in quiet tones , after a pause . " You will realise that , if you have not done so already , Constance . "

He sat brooding over his coffee and cigar- ettes for a long time , then rose at last with a shrug of his broad shoulders , anathematising himself as a fool , and drove to Down - street . Constance had been lunching with a party at a fashionable restaurant , and had just reached home ; consequently , David was kept waiting for her for nearly ten minutes . When at last she did put in an appearance , her manner was somewhat stiff and formal .
" I got your note , " said David , a trifle awk- wardly , when he had shaken hands . " You were out of town yesterday ,, per- No , I was in town , and I intended to call in the afternoon , " responded David , hastily , conscious of the implied rebuke , " but I was -er - prevented from coming . "

I was expecting to see you yesterday , and was wondering if something had hap pened to you on Saturday evening . In fact , I was on my way to call at your chambers when I caught sight of you . " He took David's arm and led the way briskly to his club . The smoking - room was empty , and when Sir Eliot had seen David ensconced in a big armchair , and lit a cigar , " Fire he lay back and waved his hand . away , " he said , with a smile . " Very well , " said Sir Eliot , with a sigh , throwing away his half - smoked cigar . " By the way , I have been doing a bit of detective work , following that scoundrel Grinwald ; but I can't make anything of him . I followed him all round the West End , and finished up at Vauxhall at last without having learnt any- thing . " Did he stay all the afternoon , and were you so very busy in the morning ? "
" I am sorry if I appeared to be lacking in courtesy , " said David , stiffly . " I know you said that you had something of importance to tell me , but I did not know that it was very urgent . Perhaps I should have sent message . "

Constance saw that she had been too severe , and coloured in some confusion . " I - oh , don't mention it , " she said , quickly . " I felt somewhat hurt because you did not call or send a note . Of course , I might have known that something came in your way , David . "
" The something ' was a detective from Scotland Yard in search of information , " said David , grimly , after a pause . " To be quite frank with you , Constance , his visit upset me , and I did not go out at all last night . INDICATIONS OF SPRING .
A wonderful list of " Indications of Spring , " started by an old gentleman who
died in 1797 , at the age of ninety , and con-
taining the results of observations extending
over a century and a - half , gives the following averages medium as dates when
various
flowers , birds , & c . , appear : Snowdrops , Janu- ary 16th ; hawthorn , May 8th ; -wood - anemone , April 4th . Rooks build February 9th ; swal- lows appear April 13th ; cuckoo sings April 23rd . In 1790 , a yellow butterfly was seen on January 14th . Frogs and toads start their annual croaking concerts about March 24th . Ring - doves were heard to coo on Christmas Day 1857. For ninety - three years the night- ingale was observed to sing about April 28th , although it has done so as early as the seventh day of that month .
CONCERNING CROSSES . Do you know the difference between the Latin , Greek , and St. Andrew's crosses ? Many grown people do not , and it is reason- able to assume that the younger readers may need the information . The Latin cross is the one with which we are all familiar . The lower limb is a good deal longer than the other three limbs . The Greek cross , on the con- trary , has all the limbs of equal length - two pieces crossed in the middle at right angles . St. Andrew's cross is in the form of the letter X. The Greek cross is sometimes called the cross of St. George , and is blended with that of St. Andrew , to form the flag called the
Union Jack .
WHY MAN IS MORTAL .
There is a strange tradition in vogue among the Bachilange tribe , in the Congo . The tra- dition is to the effect that God one day said to the sun " Here is a gourd of Malafou ; place it on the earth ( and indicated the west ) , but if you wish to be immortal , drink not from what I have confided to thee . "
God spoke to the moon in the same way . The sun and the moon obeyed their instruc- tions . At length man appealed to God to make a journey from east to west , and re- ceived permission . He set out , accompanied
by his dog . The dog raised up an evil spirit , and the man drank from the gourd before he finished his journey . Immediately the firma-
ment darkened like the skin of a black man , and God was angry , and said : " You shall not live for ever , " and the dog was driven out of the country of the Bachilange , and the people -drank no more from the gourd of Malafou . THE SEA - WOLF .
Of all the Sahabitants of the ocean few are more destructive than the sea - wolf - a kind of dolphin , which attains , when full grown , a length of fourteen feet and a weight of 3,000 pounds . When a mother walrus perceives a sea - wolf , she endeavours to throw her cub on to an iceberg , if one is near . Failing this , she gets it on top of her head , and swims with it above water . But this is vain . Diving far below , the fish of prey comes up with tremen- dous force , striking the frantic mother a ter rific blow , and jolting the cub off her head into the water . Here it falls an easy victim to the assailant , and is soon devoured ..

A FISH THAT BEFRIENDS MAN .
In the South Seas there dwells a fish that , from its many bright colours , bears the popu- lar name of the parrot - fish . It seems to have but one end in life , and that is to prevent the growth of coral reefs . Thus it well deserves

A Baby's Pelisse .
The advent of a " Little Stranger " of very near relationship has sent my thoughts towarde the garbing of these most important little people - who have been indeed somewhat over- looked of late in this column .
As , however , there are always babies to be provided for , I think the little pelisse sketched in No. 1,772 will be sure to find some readers . who will welcome it - for " Miss " of " Master "
Baby - as it is only the headgear which offers any distinguishing feature at this early age , and if required for a boy a small cap can be used instead of the hood sketched .
The garment in which the small person is so contentedly seated is carried out in white cash- mere or fine white serge , as these are about the best materials for an ordinary everyday affair . If you want something smarter you can choose bengaline , Roman satin , or velveteen .
In the case of the pelisse sketched , the orna- mentation consists merely of a flat fold of silk or satin as an edging to the cape and collar ,

The frook portion is lined with nun's - veiling , which is both light and warm , but for the cape and collar sarcenet should be selected for the purpose . The lining may be put in separately , so that it can easily be removed for summer wear . The fronte are turned in and hemmed , buttonholes being made in the right side and buttons sewn on the left to correspond with these , whilst the bottom is merely turned . up and hemmed . The cape will require a little care when making not to stretch the edges , so should be laid out flat on a large table , the lining tacked to it in the middle , the edges carefully turned in quite half an inch , tacked along fairly . The fold must be cut on closely , and pressed .

the exact cross of the silk , or it will not set , and good turnings must be allowed for the same Also do not forget to snip the selvedges and to open and press the seams . The fold - if to be slip - stitched to the edge should be tacked evenly on leno , then the edges turned in and tacked , and afterwards arranged and pinned or tacked to the edge of the cape , before slip- stitching it , in place , with silk thread . Be care ful to keep the corners sharp , and cut off any superfluous material from underneath . The lin- ing can then be felled in place , and the cape pressed on the wrong side . In the case of the collar the frilling can be secured between the edges of the lining and the material - before fell- ing these together , when it can be secured to the neck and neatened .

The pelisse will take about 2 yards of 44 - inch material and a yard of narrow - width silk . New Combinations .
The present taste in underwear leans to the plain and simple outline , as in our outer garb , Lace , it is by which it has been influenced . said , is returning to favour as a trimming , but so far the taste is for lingerie embroidered on the material and free from fussy trimmings , in order not to interfere with the set of the frock worn with it , where combis and day wear are
concerned .
As the latter undergarment is so generally worn , I have selected a nice new model for illustration in No. 1.773 , the novelty consisting

At the fashion inclines to the day however , Present culotte " form of knee finish , that is quite plain . If you prefer this kind to the design Hlustrated you can easily omit the alota through which the ribbon is drawn , and let the edges be quite loose ; but a pretty idea would be to put a band of wide insertion in place of the ribbon and the slots as in the sketch , which will have a very pretty effect .
The diagram shows the shape of the pattern , it on 36 - inch longcloth , of

Now join up the darts by means of narrow run - and - fell seams , being care- ful to take them off to fine points at the tips . Next join the lower leg portions in the same way , also the short piece in front , mark with a X , then the centre - back , and finish off the ends neatly .
Lastly , embroider the neck , sleeves , and knee- edges as you see in the sketch , make the but tonholed alots for the ribbon , pass this through , and finish off neatly . For the scalloped edges you can draw semicircles round a halfpenny or a shilling , or the transfers for the purpose , as you prefer , and , of course , make the em broidered decoration as elaborate as you wish .

The person who knows how to laugh , when to laugh , and what to . laugh at achieved a philosophy all his own .
We never know how one good act of ours may cheer and encourage others , or how ter- rible an influence one single wrong may have . It is with narrow - souled people as with narrow - necked bottles : the less they have in them the more noise they make in pouring it out . - POPE .
All really frank people are amusing , and would remain so if they could remember that other people may sometimes want to be frank and amusing too .
A sigh is a confession of failure , a signal of surrender . Never give in . Failure will not dog your footsteps if you face the future with dogged resolution .

Half the world is on the wrong scent in the pursuit of happiness . They think it consists in having and getting , and in being served by others . It consists in giving and in serving others .
The secret of all progress lies in achieving something better than we have been able to do before , and then making that achievement a new standard , to be equalled at least , to be surpassed if is possible .

The Chinese , in archery , have one rule which they call the " Rule of the Superior Man . " It runs thus a " When the archer misses the centre of the target he turns round and seeks for the cause of the failure in himself . " There seems to be a hint here for others , and not for archery alone .
GET READY
It is a great thing to be prepared , not only to die , but also to live . The prises of life- the higher , if not always the lower material prizes - go to the man who is there , and who is there as a prepared man .. The best ad- vice , then , that can be given to a young man or woman is this : " Be ready ! " But no one can be ready without getting ready , and to get ready , for any great task , at any rate . is a matter of time , perhaps also of much toil and severe sacrifice . Often we fail to achieve the best results because we do not take time to the get ready , our zeal springing up like squash , instead of hardening into fibre like the oak . The best values in life come high and come hard .
