SOCIETY FOR THE ABOLITION
OF VIVISECTION .
The Society offers to send a popular speaker free of charge to Literary Societies , League Meetings , etc. With regard to , the Lecturer , the secretary of a large Brotherhood said : " Mr. Reed did us very good service , and the men were delighted with his earnestness and ability . " 22 Northumberland Avenue , London , w.c.
UPTON BISHOP .
The action of the Managers is remarkable in view of the fact that a long discussion took place on the question at Saturday's meeting of the County Education Committee , when it was decided by 14 to 18 votes that the master be re - instated . The Chairman of the County Council and the Bishop of Here ford then said the committee was in honour bound to re - instate the teacher according to the terms of the strike settlement . These terms included clause that the National Union of Teachers could negotiate with new teachers with a view to their places being taken by the former teachers . If this were not adhered to , said Col. Decie , the members of the National Union of Teachers would come out on strike again , and possibly the Government would stop the grants .. Objection to the re - instatement is on the ground that Mr. Bates was a striker .
C. E. M. S. - On Sunday afternoon last , at 3 o'clock , a special service -for men was held at the Parish Church of St. John the Baptist in connection with the local branch of the Church of England Men's Society , the Vicar , the Rev. R. A. Lyne , officiating . The special form of service sanctioned by the Right Rev. the Lord Bishop of London was sued . Hymns 282 , 165 , and 215 were sung , Mr. F. , W. Davoll very kindly presiding at the organ . A stirring address was delivered by the Vicar . After the service , five new members were admitted to the society . NATIONAL CONSERVATIVE LEAGUE . -On Saturday night last . the usual monthly meeting of the Upton Bishop and District " Lodge was held at the Lodgeroom , Crow Hill , the Deputy Master , Bro . T. A. Powell , presiding over a large number of brethren . Six new members were elected , and four others were proposed for election at the next meeting on April 25th . The Covenant Home Rule was signed by all present . The business of the Lodge having been conclud- ed , the remainder of the evening was spent in a social manner .

Army Service Corps . COMMANDING OFFICER'S DINNER AT MUCH BIRCH ..
THE NEXT CAMP .
The
ly at the Axe and Cleaver , Much Birch , in A very successful dinner was given recent connection with the Army Service Corps . The attendance was good , upwards of 40 sitting down to the excellent repast . following officers were present : Lieut . - Col . Leather , A.S.C. ( commanding Welsh Divis- ion T. and S. ) , Capt . and Adjutant A. E. Holbrook , A.S.C. , Capt . J. A. Hill ( Com- manding Headquarters Co. , of which the Harewood End Section formed part ) , Lieut . C. H. Vaughan , A.S.C. , S. S. M. Lewis , who is in charge of the Section , S. S. M. Dredge , etc. Several local gentlemen wrote regretting inability to attend .
thanks to Col. Leather for givng them such Capt . J. A. Hill proposed a vote of an excellent dinner , and the means of hav- ing such a pleasant evening .
The toast was received with loud applause , and accorded musical honours .
The CHAIRMAN at the outset explained the object of the meeting convened for that evening and read the circular letter sent out to each subscriber , which was to the effect that if in favour , or otherwise of a sugges- tion made at a recent committee meeting to have the club registered in order to per- mit the sale of refreshments on the ground , to strike out either " yes " or " no " in the event of their being unable to attend that evening and return the form to the secretaries .
admitted that the Kyrle were unlucky and unfortunate . Abbott , for the majority of the game was almost a passenger , sustaining a damaged knee . Had he been ' as forceful a forward throughout all the game as he was in the first quarter of an hour , Hereford might easily have found themselves a goal behind . Another piece of misfortune for the home club was the missed penalty . But taking the game in general the Kyrle were certainly not a better combination than Hereford , and a draw was a fitting result of a well - contested and hard fought two hours football . It was rather unfortunate that both club's were attired in the same the Kyrle wearing them inside their nickers and Hereford outside . The distinction was hardly noticable , and frequently passes were given to opponents in mistake . For the home club all the members gave a good ex- hibition of football , Abbott and Prosser being of great assistance . The re - play will take place at Hereford next Saturday , when another strenuous game may be expected .

pressed their reasons for opposing the regis - colour jerseys , the only difference being Newest Coats , Costumes , Dresses , Blouses , & Children's Clothes .
Letters were then read from the following gentlemen , who apart from their votes , ex- tration : -Mr . Harry Webb , M.P. , Capt . A. S. Trevor , J.P .. Rev. R. T. A. Money- Kyrle , Mr. F. Cooper , Dr. Ll . B. Green , and Mr. D. A. Meredith .
The CHAIRMAN then asked any gentle- me present to express an opinion on the subject . Mr. R. G. YATES rose and suggested that this matter should he put as a resolution . He therefore proposed that the club should he " registered " so that refreshments of any description might be sold to Members only should they require same , and that the bar must only be open for that purpose on match davs .
J. A. Hill and those present for the way In replying , Col. Leather thanked Capt . they had received the toast of his health . He wanted to see the Harewood End Sec- tion , and S. 8. M. Lewis suggested a dinner as a means to that end . He wished to thank them for their good work in camp , and through the year , as he knew some of them had a long way to come to drill . They were part of the backstay of the Company , and the Column , and he wanted to see the Sec- tion strong enough to have a home of its own . He hoped all present would work to that end . Aberystwyth was to be their camping place this year . No doubt some of them remembered going there before . I know Staff Sergt . - Major Lewis does , the troubles he had there breaking bridges in , with his engine Pride of the Wye , but by persevering we were able to make temporary bridges and overcome all difficulties I hope we shall not have those troubles this year , and that you will all have a pleasant time there . He thanked them again for their good wishes , and hoped to see them all at camp to give him their help and support .
The resolution was seconded by Mr. C. J. MORRIS .
Mr. T. W. LOVELACE moved as an amendment that the new idea was not ad- visable and also unnecessary , and a matter . too , which he thought ought to be considered was the extra work it would give to their Secretaries .
Mr. J. BEYAN seconded the amendment . Mr. JEFFERY spoke in favour of the registration , and mentioned that there would he a responsible person in charge of the bar . who would see that it was well conducted , and everything carried out as it should be . After all . refreshments would not be com- pulsory for anyone . and he therefore could not see any reasonable objection to the idea . He , however , did not agree to having a tent as in the past , as he thought that was a posi- tive disgrace to the club .
WEBB spoke against the resolution . MARATS . H. N. S. THOMAS and R. G.
Mr. MATTHEWS and Mr. WOOLER said latter remarked that he would not like to they had very onen minds on the subject . The therefore proposed that the question he al- e any ill feeling created in the club , or any dissensions amongst their members , and he lowed to stand over for decision until the annual general meeting in October next .
out of order , " as they had met there that The CHAIRMAN Tuled this suggestion evening for a definite purpose to decide either one way or the other .
A ballot was then taken - including those replies received by post , and the result was declared as follows : -Those in favour of the resolution 27 ; for the amendment 24. Re- solution carried by three votes .
He
The CHAIRMAN , in his closing remarks , said that it was hardly fair to ask their secretaries to undertake the additional work , as they already had enough to do . thought they ought to appoint a Club House Secretary , or refresments secretary , or what- ever else they might like to call him . This was left over for the committee to decide .
The meeting then terminated with a vote of thanks to the Chairman .
