The homesters ' first goal was rather unex- pected , for with a fast movement the quintet went down the field , and Powell crowned the effort by scoring a good goal . Ross again pressed after this , but for the second time their play deteriorated after a few minutes , and the " B's " were again in the picture . Davies , on the right wing , made good use of the ball when he had a chance , but he was poorly fed . He sent in a rasping first- time drive , which Bullock only just succeeded in diverting round the post for an unproduc- tive corner . THE LATE MRS . R. THOMAS . - It is with regret that we have to chronicle the death Mrs. Thomas , the esteemend wife of Mr. Richard Thomas , sen . , who passed away on Friday last , April 3rd , at an ad- vanced age . For many years as managing director of the Lydbrook Tinplate Works . Mr. Richard Thomas , with the deceased lady , resided at Bishopswood , and afterwards removed to " The Poplars , " Upper Lyd- brook . When the management passed over to Mr. R. Beaumont Thomas , the eldest son , Mr. and Mrs. R. Thomas , sen .. retired to Penarth , and it was here where the deceased peacefully passed away . The body was con- veved to Upper Lydbrook Station by the mid - day train on Tuesday last , and interred in the family vault in Lydbrook Churchyard , among tokens of the deepest respect . The body was carried from the railway station to the Church by six of the eldest employees lately engaged in the village tin works . and the chief mourners were Messrs . Richard Beaumont , Frank , Herbert , and Wyndham , all sons of the deceased , and among others who followed in the funeral procession were Messrs . G. and F. Damsell , Mr. J. Davies , Headmaster of the Joys Green Council Schools ; Mr. J. Little , Mr. A. J. Russell , and representatives from the Lyd- ney Tin Works . The funeral service was conducted by the Rev. Hubert A. Corke , Vicar of Holy Apostles . Cheltenham , who is , in the absence of the Vicar , the Rev. G. A. Hopkins , doing duty with a series of Holy Week services . The opening of the vault and other matters connected with the funeral were entrusted to Mr. E. J. Flewel- ling , builder and undertaker , of the village , and satisfactorily carried out . It will probably surprise most people to learn that as many as 200 separate clubs are registered and recognised by the Croquet Association . So far from the game being & mere Victorian survival , it is now most scientific pastime , which requires no small skill to play , the hoops being now only just wide enough to admit the ball . As much care seems to be devoted to making a good lawn for the game as is observed in laying out a golf green .
During the week Crystal Palace had drawn level with Swindon , and each gaining a vie tory on Saturday they remain on equal terms at the head of the Southern League , Swindon being entitled to the premier position because of a superior goal average . Portsmouth went down before the leaders much more readily than expected , and the 5 goals to scored raise Swindon's record for the season to nearly two to one . This splendid victory was the more noteworthy as , in the absence of Fleming , playing for England , a trial given to Rogers . in the centre , Wheatcroft partnering Jefferson on the right . So success- nl did the experiment prove that the recruit obtained no fewer than four goals , all the three that wer got in the first half , and the last of the match was from a penalty taken by Tout .
