Christmas Day falling on a Thursday , en- abled the majority of the business houses in Ross to close from the Wednesday night un- til the Monday morning , whilst those who did open on the Saturday were very pleased to close early in the evening , as trade was found to he very quiet , On Boxing Day morning , the Ross Harriers met at the New Inn , Hentland , and as this always proves a popular meet , a very large field turned out to greet the Master , and to wish him the compliments of the season , and a good day's sport . The football matches at Talbot's Meadow and Over - Ross drew together some very good gates , and the games on the whole were interesting to watch , although on Box- ing Day , the rough wind made it difficult for the players to have proper command of the leather . Anglers were not quite so numer- ous , but we understand that in some stretches of water , sport was most exhilar ating , and that some fine pike were landed . As for the hockeyites , they paid a visit to Cheltenham during the vacation , but unfor- tunately they could only get together a moderate side , whilst their onponents . He did not know of any year in which they had not had some changes or other , but this vear they had seen some very remarkable changes . For more than 25 years on this occasion they had seen Cant . Verschovle occupying a position on this nlat- form and giving away the prizes to the boys as superintendent of that school for all those years . Unfortunately , people did not grow any younger as the years rolled by , and Capt . Verschovle , now found it rather more than he could manage to face the hill that came down from Springfields , and then un to the Church again more than twice on n Sunday , and so he felt bound to give up the work which was so near and dear to his heart . and which he had carried on so de- routedly for more than 25 years . The next point was to Mr. Collins . of Little Peterstow , and on to Little Treaddow , where hounds got a well - deserved kill in the orchard , ending a most enjoyable day's sport . KYRLE PICTURE PALACE - During Ohristmas week , packed houses assembled at the Palaco , and all expressed themselves as delighted with both the pictures and turns . The Two Browns were exceptionally smart in their comedy jag- gling , banjo playing , add American mat dancing ; while Miss Jennie Davies , " The Welsh Nightin gale , " was enthusiastically encored almost every time she appeared . This week's programme is quite as attractive , for the Lewis Trio , in their comedy sketch entitled , " Half an hour with the baby , " are most amusing . The serpentine and butterfly dancing noena , staged by Mian May Morton , are very pretty and meeting with great Booses , while Master Freddie Lewis , the clever boy comedian , is quite favourite with the people .
