CHAPTER XII .
May Trefusis returned from her visit to the That the witch with very mingled feelings . old woman had told her a good many true things she could not deny . She seemed to read her like a book - to divine some of her . thoughts to put into blunt most secret speech what she had not dared to whisper to herself . But could she read the future with equal certainty ?
That question perplexed and troubled her . It was pleasant to be told that whispering tongues would be silenced , that suspicion should give place to eonfidence , that the ter- rible shadow that lay upon her like a pall should be lifted . But when the old woman in her crystal gazing went further afield , and spoke of a dark stranger who would cross her path and prove to be her destiny , she felt something like resentment . It jarred every nerve in her body to have such a matter even hinted at . She was still the betrothed wife of Frank Carleon . He was still her ideal in many things , perhaps not quite so much her ideal as he had been . Still , she was resolved to be loyal to him , and if she never saw him again . to cherish his memory to the end of her life .
It had been a cause of distress to her for several days past that she had been unable to grieve over the destruction of her hopes and dreams as much as she thought she ought to have done . Most girls , under the same cir- cumstances would liave been prostrated with grief and disappointment . What could be more tragic than to be robbed of her lover , on her wedding morn . She told herself that her hair ought to have turned grey , that she ' ought to have hidden herself and refused to see any living creature , or else taken poison and so escaped the misery of life . Yet , as a matter of fact , the desire to live was as strong as ever , while her interest in the world and in her friends had not abated in the least .
Indeed , in the case of Dr. Tregony , it had considerably increased . At the present moment she was far more concerned about him that about herself . Her greatest anxiety was lest he should not recover .
It was disquieting , however , not to say an- noying , that the witch was able to guess her feelings so accurately . Could it be true that she had never really loved Frank Carleon ? That she did not know what love was ? The witch had told her so bluntly and harshly . But even that she did not mind so much as to have it hinted that her real fate or destiny might eross her path at any time . That her own will was not to count in the matter , that all these matters were arranged beforehand by a blind fate , and that nothing was to be done but just drift where the stream carried one . The ego in her rebelled against such an as- sumption . She was not a mere atom , she was a living woman . with power to choose for herself .

Would you mind writing one or letters for me ? " he questioned at length . Her face brightened in a moment , and she rose at once from her chair . How glad she felt that she could be of service to him no one knew ; she hardly realised how much herself .
" It is the first time my brain has been clear enough to put ten sentences together consecutively , " he went on , with the same wan smile lighting up his pale face- " and my mother , who is too ill to come to see me , will be glad to hear . "
" She will be delighted . The letters I have written to her will have been poor comfort . "
You have been very good " But she was out of the room before he could say any more , and in a few moments was back again with pens and paper .
She almost loved him for the words he dic- tated to his mother - so full of tender solici- tude and deep affection .

Her first sense of impending trouble deepened a hundred - fold .
The stranger regarded her for a few moments with fixed attention . Then she said , slowly and deliberately , " Before I saw you I wanted to hurt you ; but maybe you did not know . You do not look the sort that would wrong another woman . " " I do not understand you , " May said , sharply . " Why should I wrong anyone ? What is there I do not know ? "
" You will understand me soon enough , " was the somewhat dogged reply ; " and pain- ful things , they say , should not be told too quickly . " Whatever you have got . to say , please say it at once , " May replied , in a tone of im- patience .
" It can't be told in a word , " the woman answered , in the same tired way . " I must take my time over it , and tell it as best I can . It will be as painful for me to tell as for you to hear , and the worst of it is , as far as I can see , no good can come of the telling . " Then distress why yourself ? " answered , sharply . May felt a cold shiver run down her back . Could it be possible that she had been so near destruction , and had escaped as by the skin of her teeth ? But even now doubt assailed her . It seemed impossible that Frank Car leon had so deceived her . He was so hand- some , so fair - spoken , so gallant , so thoroughly a gentleman in word and action , so devoted as a lover , so considerate of her feelings . It seemed to her as though the very ground were slipping from under her feet ; as though the foundations of things were being re- moved . If this story was true , whom could she ever believe or trust again ?

" But they say I've no legal claim , " the woman answered , almost tearfully , and she darted her hand swiftly across her eyes , and piece of paper or the mumblings of a parson , ' she went on , scornfully . Here is the evidence of our marriage , " and she pressed her baby a little more closely to her .
May's sympathies went out to the young woman unconsciously . Whether her story was true , wholly or only in part , it was evi dent she had been greatly , wronged . She had trusted a man who had deceived her , and of all wicked and cruel things , that seemed to May to be the worst . If that man was Frank Carleon , then she would despise him and loathe him to the day of her death .
In spite of her prepossession in his favour , she could not resist the conviction that they had both been the dupes of the same man . It was a humiliating reflection , but there was no escape from it , nor did it mend matters in the least by supposing that the woman before her was a weak , yielding fool , and had walked open - eyed into a trap . Who was she that she should fling stones at the weakness or credulity of another woman ? In one respect they were both in the same boat . They had taken the man at his face value . Had be-
lieved everything he said . Had been flattered by his attention . Had been carried away by
man , according to her philosophy , whom fate
had decreed for her .
She felt startled , almost dismayed .
The
witch's words were being fulfilled so rapidly . She had told her , in the first place , that she had never really been in love with Frank Carleon . In the second place , that he was unworthy of her love . In the third place , that the whispering tongues of St. Olaves Jeth was a silent , taciturn man , with should be silenced ; and in the fourth place , weather - beaten face , rusty - brown hair and that a dark - eyed stranger , whom she would whiskers , small greenish eyes , a low fore- meet , would be her fate . head , and an abnormally wide mouth . one seemed to know much about him - not even his wife . He went out when he liked , and came in when he pleased . He was not the kind of man to attract his fellows to his side . He was too sullen , too slow of speech , too much of a heathen in his beliefs .
No
Jeth had no faith in God or devil , heaven or hell , witch or wizard ; and as he had no faith , neither did he appear to have any fear . He was daring in the extreme , cared nothing for any man , was indifferent to everybody's opinion , and appeared to desire nothing so much as to be left alone .
Gave - room
The roof of Jeth's cuddy was on a level with the top of the cliff , and was distin- guished by a chimney - pot which was kept whitewashed . A short zigzag path led down to a stout oaken door , which opened into a room about ten feet square . The sides of this were boarded with drift - wood of The floor was varying colour and thickness . also of wood ,, covered with matting . One of another corner was the corners was given up to a fireplace , in a cupboard . The side next the sea was pierced by a round hole which served as a window , and through which Jethro swept the wide main with his glass . The cliff dropped abruptly for a dozen or
The knowledge of the woman was abso lutely uncanny . How could she possibly know that she did not really love Frank Carleon . She did not know herself at the time . She be- lieved that her heart was entirely his . It was not until the last few days that she had begun to suspect the truth .
And equally surprising was her knowledge of Frank's unworthiness . How could she , pos- sibly know this ? She had never seen Mary Monk , and , humanly speaking , could not And yet she had know anything of her story . thrown out hints that could mean only one thing .
It was no doubt true , also , that the wind of popular favour was beginning to blow once more in her direction . Tilda was quite con fident on the matter , and she herself had felt the change . That might be due in some measure to the fact that Dr. Tregony was getting better ; but how should the witch fore- see all this ? And if she had been right on three points , was there not a strong presump tion that she would be right also on the fourth ? It was a disquieting thought , and she re- sented its intrusion ; but as often as she drove . it away it came back again . She found herself on the look - out for the stranger directly she

Jeth stuck to his post with great assiduity . As a matter of fact , he preferred his cuddy on the cliff to his home in the village . Tregony was almost exhausted by the time he had finished his dictation , and he closec his eyes in utter weariness . She looked a him from time to time as she folded and ad- dressed the letters , and the maternal instinct -which is of the essence of true womanhood seemed to leap suddenly into life . She wanted to mother him , so wan and helpless did he seem .
Taking the letters with her , she hurried out of the room , and in a few minutes was back again with a cup of warm , fragrant soup .. " Will you try a little of this ? " she ques- tioned , smiling at him . " I am sure it will do you good . "
She fed him slowly with a teaspoon , as & mother would feed a babe , and every now and then their eyes met . She laughed gaily , and chattered all the time . She wanted to hide her feelings , and was afraid he might suspect the stronger and delightful thrills that kept chasing each other through her veins .
For himself , he forgot the pain and weak- ness that had been his portion for so many days . It was sheer delight to be fed by so fair a nurse . He had no illusions about the present or the future , supposing he should Live . Indeed , he scarcely thought at all . It Mrs. Hyder met her on her return and told was too much effort to think . He was con- her that Dr. Tregony had been asking for tent to lie still and swallow the liquid food her , and all unconscibusly the blood mounted that was being given to him , and feast his to her cheeks , and her heart began to beat eyes on the fairest face - for him - the world perceptibly faster . contained .
She went to her room and slowly removed her hat and coat .
Would she grieve very much if Dr. Tre- gony were to die ? Had lie become to her dur ing those awful days and nights of suffering something more than a mere acquaintance ?
Was her interest in life and the world bound up with his recovery Did she think more of him than she ought to do ?
These were some of the questions that crossed her mind as she stood before her mirror and tidied her wind - blown hair . She was quite cool and collected when she entered his room and walked up to his bed- side . Yet when his eyes met hers her heart leaped again like a startled hare . There was something in his look , some quality , that she had never noticed before . She tried to meet his gaze without flinching , but her eyes dropped after a few moments in spite of her-
self .
" You are better to - day ? " she said , pulling a chair close to his bedside and sitting down . She had tried to speak without emotion ; but his ear was quick to detect the tremor , and he smiled wistfully .
" I am in less pain , " he answered , " and my brain seems clearer . "
That surely is good news , " she said , brightly , and her eyes sought his as though a magnet drew them .
The lessening of pain is not always a good symptom , " he answered slowly ; then added , after a long pause , " But I am in good hands . "
" You are in the hands of God , " she said , the tears springing unbidden to her eyes " and oh ! I have never ceased to pray for your recovery . "
" You have prayed for me ? " he questioned , a faint tinge of colour creeping slowly to his cheeks .
Do you think me so poor a Christian - so worthless a friend ? " And she turned away her face and looked out of the window . He did not answer for awhile . until she looked at him again .

" And you will not try to hold him back from me ? "
May smiled sadly and pathetically . " No , " she said , " I will not try to hold him back , and if by any chance he should still be alive , I will do my best to restore him to you . "

" Oh , you are an angel ! " the woman said , impulsively , and I shall go back with lighter heart than I brought with me , " and she rose quickly to her feet .
" You must not go until you have had some- thing to eat . You look tired and not too strong , " and May walked across to the fire- place and touched the bell .
The woman sat down again without a word , but her lips trembled , and her eyes were full of tears .
In a few minutes tea was brought , and of a substantial kind . Peggy , the maid , looked hard at the visitor , and wondered who she was and why she was there .
" Have you come far ? " May questioned , after a long silence , during which the woman ate almost ravenously .

lips , but she made no reply . All her wits seemed to have deserted her . Her brain was in a whirl ; her heart torn with conflicting emotions . If this woman's story was true , or only partly true , it revealed to her a phase of life that she had never even suspected . Her trust in Frank Carleon had been absolute . She no more doubted him than she doubted her father , or Dr. Polwhele , or the Vicar . Her knowledge of the world was so limited , and the few men she knew in her own station of life were so honourable and upright , that she scarcely conceived it possible that a gentleman , so called - a man of education and position could also be a rascal . All her ideals seemed to go down with a crash . Her faith in human nature seemed to wither at the roots . " Are you sure you are not mistaken ? " she gasped at length . " Is it not some other man of whom you are thinking ? "
" Mistaken ? " the woman answered in a tone of scorn . " There is only one Frank Carleon in the world , " and she opened a small handbag that dangled at her wrist and drew out a portrait . " Is that your lover or isn't it ? " she questioned , defiantly . " Did he give you that ? " May questioned , meekly . " Of course he gave it to me . And he gave knew that it was a sign that he was getting me many other things . my wedding - ring for

Yet there was nothing in the appearance of the woman to cause her any apprehension . She was plainly , though respectably , dressed , with a face that was rather pleasant than otherwise to look upon .
