The committee which has the arrange- ments of the grand patriotic evening concert in hand , are leaving nothing to chance ; in fact , all their energies and work are concen- trated on two things . Firstly to make the concert a real and substantial financial suc- cess ; and secondly , that the concert itself shall be one of the most attractive ever and the following morning the latter's look of astonishment and disgust on being handed by the postman an enormous white feather was a sight that would have delighted his worst enemy .. Since the publication of the Roll of Hon- our in last week's " Rose Gazette , " we have received very many letters containing the names of other Ross men who are now serv- ing their King and Country , either at home or abroad , and many thanks are due to those who have been and are willing to assist us in its completion . Even with the addi- tion this week of considerably over one hun- dred names , the " roll " is by no means a complete one , and it will be greatly facilitat- ing the work if those of our readers , who know the names of men not included in this week's roll " will communicate with the Editor and send full particulars of the men's names , addresses , and regiments to which they are now attached . . We believe there are several other Ross men serving in the Navy , but up to the present we have been unable to obtain full particulars . Informa- tion respecting these brave defenders of our Empire will be gladly welcomed . LOCAL NEWS . Ross PARISH CHURCH . - The Harvest Thanks giving Service will be held on Wednesday , Sept. 30th . The usual thanksgiving services for the safe ingathering of the harvest were held in the Ross Wesleyan Church on Friday last , when , thanks to many members of the church and congregation , the interior pre- sented a very attractive appearance , the flowers , fruits , corn , and vegetables sent for decorative purposes having been very taste- fully arranged . The Rev. Charles Lumsden , the newly appointed Superintendent Minis ter , was the preacher , and he took for his text the words , " The Witness of the Har- " Acts xiv . , 17. He said that Paul's vest , " argument from nature was the strongest evi- dence of the living God to the pagan mind , and the harvest presented the character of the Creator in His benevolence towards His creatures . - The offertory was taken up on behalf of the Ross Cottage Hospital . www . The Local Fund is intended to provide for the immediate assistance of those suffer- ng any distress in the Rural District in consequence of the war , and in case of any surplus the committee will exercise their dis- cretion as to its ultimate disposal . On Sunday , the services were conducted by the Rev. F. A well attended meeting of the above Council was held on Wednesday evening last in the Baptist Church Vestry . The Secretary read a letter from the Ross Cottage Hospital Committee , in reply to a request that ward services on alternate Sun- days be permitted , to be con ad by the Ministers of the Free Churches . Mr. POWICKE said he was present when the letter was read and considered , and was sorry to say it was received in a somewhat narrow and parochial spirit , quite unworthy of a public institution . Col. Middleton had be divided suggested Nonconformists at snother hour , which would meet the case given in Ross . Pike is acting as hon . secretary , to make a very special appeal to the people of Ross and district , to show their sympathy with these two most deserving ob- jects by attending this concert . We are confident , too , that the very heroic and gallant defence which the little Belgian Army put up against the vastly superior forces of Germany will - when the events in this great war are chronicled in the world's history - prove to be one of the outstanding features of the European War of 1914. The bravery of the menfolk , and the frightful sufferings of the women and children , will , we know , appeal to the hearts of every Briton , and the people of Ross and the neighbourhood will answer to the appeal in their usual generous spirit . seconded . Mr. KETTLE mentioned that in other towns where he had ministered , he had found such Free Church Services in opera- tion , and he considered the request of the Ross Council perfectly reasonable . Other Members expressed their disappoint- ment , and mention was made of the dona- tions made to the funds of the institution by the late Mr. T. Blake . It was decided to appeal to the committee for a service at a different hour in accordance with Col. Middleton's suggestion . meetings for Prayer continued to be very The Secretary reported that the special well attended , and arrangements for the coming week were made . It was announced that arrangements were Ledbury on Monday next , on the occasion of Dr. F. B. Meyer's visit to the Federation . ENGLISH CHURCH UNION . HEREFORDSHIRE OFFICERS KILLED . CAPTAIN DOUGLAS LUCAS - TOOTH . The readers of the " Ross Gazette " will learn with the deepest regret of the death at the front of Captain Douglas K. L. Lucas- Tooth , of the 9th Lancers , second son of Sir Robert Lucas - Tooth , of Holme Lacy House , Herefordshire . Captain Douglas Lucas - Tooth took part in the magnificent charge of the 9th Lancers at Tonlin on August 24th , when the regiment suffered severely . Indeed , only 72 mustered after the engagement , although 200 more came in later . It is understood that he won the highest opinion of superior officers pre- sent , who observed with admiration the very sd . pronounced gifts he displayed as a cavalry leader . 104 16 1 1 05 £ 105 76 LOCAL RELIEF FUND . Even the grim tragedy of war has its lighter side , so listen to the story which I heard here to - day while waiting for news of Hon . Sec . for Ross Division . the great battle . Towards me , down one OSWALD R. MIDDLETON . 1st Herefordshire Regiment . ment of Dragoons . There was something receiving every attention from doctors and nurses of the Dutch Red Cross Society . The crews of the Aboukir , Hogue , and Cressy which were torpedoed this morning The were composed mainly of reservists . Aboukir was first to be struel , at about six o'clock . A terrific explosion followed , and the ship began to sink rapidly . Seeing the ship in a sinking condition and believing she had struck a mine , the Hogue lowered her boats and began to save the swimming survivors . The Hogue herself was , however , shortly afterwards torpedoed . I gather that both the Aboukir and Hogue sank very rapidly . No sooner had Cressy began to put out her boats than she was also torpedoed . The Cressy was seen at eight o'clock by the captain of a Dutch steamer , Flora , bound from Rotterdam for Leith . The captain saw the Cressy only , and knew at first no- thing of what had happened to the two other vessels . While gazing at the Cressy he saw her suddenly heel over and go down . He immediately steamed towards the spot and lowered his boats , and then for the first time understood that three cruisers in all had been sunk . He was able to save 287 men who were clinging to rafts and pieces of timber . He states that several English . sailing boats are coming to Zuruiden with more survivors . From conflicting accounts one gathers that there were three Gerinan submarines . All agree that the Cressy , bravely firing her guns as she sank , sent two German submarines to the bottom , but his is not officially confirmed . As the Flora was getting ready to steam away with rescued sailors some British destroyers appeared in sight . Rotterdam , Tuesday . The Dutch steamer Titan which arrived here to - night from Leith reports that at 7.50 this morning she sighted three large British cruisers which quarter of an hour later were sinking . At 9.50 she reached the scene of the disaster , and rescued 114 men . She left for the Hook of Holland , but at 12.40 was detained by a British torpedo boat which took over 89 of the rescued men . She landed at the Hook of Holland . Between 300 and 400 survivors of the British naval disaster have been landed at Harwich . It is stated that the Aboukir went down in six minutes . Only 48 of a H.M.S. complement of 843 were saved . Lowestoft , which brought the majority of the survivors into port , reports having seen two German submarines which immediately dived . The Lowestoft and other boats steamed over the spot at full speed hoping to ram the enemy . It is stated that the Cressy sank two submarines before being torpedoed . RUSSIANS IN EAST PRUSSIA .
