The recruiting campaign here still proceeds apace , and results are , on the whole , gratifying . Some slight resent- ment has , however , been shown in Cinder- ford at the methods employed . At such a moment this is particularly unfortunate , though it is hardly likely to deter those who have fully made up their minds to join the forces . No one can be said to be deserving of blame in the matter , which barely amounts to any more than a regrettable misunder- ( ex - standing . The cause of the friction is this : On Tuesday evening Col. Scobie , of the Herefordshire Territorials , accompanied by Major Kelly , Mr. R. H. Storey ( of Bishops- wood ) , and others held a meeting in the Cinderford Hown Hall for the purpose of se- curing recruits for the 2nd Battalion of the Herefordshire Territorials , and their action was looked upon by many as an intrusion , the view being widely held that they were not justified in invading another county for such an object . We understand , how- ever , that the Gloucestershire Territorial Association had previously been approached , and gave the meeting their full sanction and support . The agents were Mr. thoroughly representative body . The parish TD . Morgan ( Conservative ) , and Mr. J. was mapped out into various districts and Bricknell Webb ( Liberal ) . authorised collectors appointed in each . At a meeting held at the schools on Monday last , under the chairmanship of the Rector ( the Rev. E. Parnell , LL.B. ) , the hon . treas urer ( Mr. I. W. Baldwin , J.P. ) announced that he had in hand the sum of £ 27 8s . 9d . The collectors reported that many of the subscribers were willing to give further smounts if and when necessary . The hon . secretary reported that the result of the ladies ' meeting held at Melville House was that they had formed a ladies ' sewing com- mittee with Mrs. T. G. Miles as president and Mrs. W. Lewis as hon . secretary . A quantity of flannel had been obtained , and the members had eut it into shirts and vests , which they distributed amongst their friends to be made up ; further , wool had been given to many to knit socks and stock- ings . The hon . treasurer was instructed to pay , an account for material supplied to the sewing party , and after keeping in hand £ 5 for emergencies , to forward the balance to the objects of the fund . Therefore the County Fund and the Soldiers ' and Sailors ' Families Association will each receive a first contribution from Ruardean of £ 8 11s . 6d . Bournville By test -- -- the best . Cocoa GLOUCESTERSHIRE FARMERS AND MILK SUPPLY . Mr. Sherwood , in opening , said he hoped the improvement shown in the last few lists , and the manner in which overseers had car- ried out their duties . would be continued , for there was very little likelihoods of a general election this year so that the lists they were preparing would be used next year ; therefore it was very desirable they should be as correct as possible . A large portion of their thoughts were taken up by the war , but they must not be slack in doing their duty , especially those of them who were unable to go and do military ser- vice . Fortunately England was not like France and Belgium , who had frontiers to contend with , but although there must be great British losses on land and sea , when their brave defenders returned triumphantly they must see that the ordinary life of the country had continued . They were fortunate- ly not in the same position as Belgium , who had had her chief cities desolated and her farms ruined . When their defenders re- turned they must . see that those at home had done their civil duties . During the sitting the lists of the various parishes were carefully examined , the Revis- ing Barrister pointing out in some instances certain alterations and improvements which might be useful in the future . Addressing the Court at Hereford on Saturday , the Revising Barrister said he wished to correct any false impressions of a speech which he made at the City Revision Court held in the Guildhall . He then made few remarks of a general and unprepared character , and they were admirably report- ed , as was always the case at Horeford ; but one of the reports made him speak as if he had suggested that the work of politics and statesmanship and so on was not really ser- ious , and that political contests were not really serious , whilst the other report made LITTLE MARCLE . ATTEMPTED SUICIDE . A hop - picker , named John Bentford , a Londoner , was charged at Ledbury Police Court on Satur- day with attempting to commit suicide by cutting his throat on the previous Thursday . Mr. Spencer H. Bickham was the presiding Magistrate . Mr. T. C. White , farmer , of Little Marcle Court , said that he was told Sunday School , 2.45 . Where circumstances permit , the total head of live stock should be in- creased , particularly animals such as pigs , which multiply quickly . While there should be no diminu- tion in the number of live stock kept , the strictest economy ( subject to proper con- ditioning ) and foresight with regard to feeding is advocated .
