The introduction of matters outside the objects for which the committee was appointed is to be deplored , as it is in the best interests of ratepayers in the town and country that all causes of friction should be removed as far as possible . Whe we remember the immense impor- tance attached to the higher education in Germany and other countries and note what great strides these countries are making in the world of commerce , all this contention over the upkeep of the Secondary School shows too plainly that these great education- al advantages are not appreciated at their true value in this country . What will those who follow us think of it all when they find themselves handicapped through our neglect to see that they are equipped with the means to compete successfully in the struggle of life ? The members meeting was followed on Monday by a Rummage Sale , which was generously provided by the friends of the cause , and was equally well supported by the public - with the result that a goodly sum . was realized in aid of the funds of the Ross SHEEP DIP IN CIDER . - At Cheltenham Police Court on Monday , before the Mayor and other Magistrates , Albert Lloyd ( 31 ) a labourer , was charged with having malicious- ly caused to be taken by John Holder and Society . others , cider with which Petifer's sheep dip had been mixed , thereby endangering their lives on June 2nd . PENSIONS TO LOCAL APPLICANTS On Wednesday last this institution held its annual general meeting at the Hotel Cecil , London , to elect pensioners , etc. Lord An- caster presided , and amongst those present were the Earl of Coventry and a number of subscribers from the Gloucester district . The Council congratulated its members on the financial position of the institution , which enabled them to make considerable additions . to the list of pensions . Up to the date of election there were 1,154 pensioners on the roll at an annual cost of £ 23.331 , and the elections on Wednesday last added thereto 20 males and 18 married couples and 68 females at an increased annual charge of £ 2,440 . With the addition of the whole of the octo- genarian candidates a further sum of £ 500 per annum was added to the total . It was gratifying to note that one half of the un - t successful candidates will be relieved either by pension or by grants during the ensuing 12 months . It was also particularly pleasing to note amongst the list of successes two local names , viz .. Mr. John Rowland wig- more ( first application ) . 621 votes : and Mrs. Ellen Frances Hartland , widow ( fifth appli- cation ) , 443 votes . The pensions are £ 26 A cordial vote of thanks was accorded the hon . local secs . , the clergy , and the masters and members of the hunta . It was also ob- served that in order to maintain the high standard of benevolence still greater efforts were invited to augment the income of the institution , especially in the direction of an- nual subscriptions . All cannot be successful , and on this occasion 154 were unsuccessful . The total votes recorded for the unsuccess- ful varied from ane to 389.
