LOCAL TOPIOS .
To - day ( Wednesday ) the King celebrates his 49th birthday , and his loyal subjects in this country and throughout the British Em- pire will unite in wishing him many happy returns of the day . The official celebration does not take place until June 22 - a cir- cumstance which is not a little confusing to the public mind - but whatever officialdem may decree for State and ceremonial pur- poses , June 3 is the day on which his Majesty's devoted subjects put up their most fervent prayers for his continued health and prosperity . To reign is to serve , and it is on that principle that King George and Queen Mary have acted , and they have their reward in the sure affection and ad- miration of their people . " God Save the King " the National Anthem may well be sung with special fervour on the King's birthday by those who reflect on the critical days which lie close ahead . Should the King visit this neighbourhood during the Army manoeuvres in September and it is quite possible that he may - he will find the 18th Century Torch Bearer , Rowleston loyal spirit shown by the " Man of Ross " Charch , Pontrilas . still dwells in the hearts of his subjects in Rosa .

a gambling chance goes scot - free . This year it is even hinted that the big Derby field evening by the Rev. O. H. It is a curious coincidence that , when all the world is mourning the untimely loss of the aviator Hamel , whose exploits have re- ceived the official notice of the Admiralty , news comes of the lost Swedish aeronaut Andrée , who started in his balloon for the North Pole just seventeen years ago . This time the tale is of the remains of a great balloon , and such a one as Andrée navigat
ed , found in one of the trackless forests of Eastern Siberia , whither it is quite likely the intrepid explorer was carried by adverse wind currents . It still remains , however , for the aviators of the future to reach the Poles by " overhead : " but since the Andrée balloon was lost , both North and South Poles have yielded up their mysteries , the one to an American - not Dr. Cook : the other to Capt . MUSICAL SUCCESSES . - At the Hereford Eisteddfod held on Whit - Monday , in the class for junior pianistes under 16 , four candidates were selected to play before Dr. McNaught in the final ( three of whom were pupils of Miss Yorath . L.R.A.M. ) . Master Ridley Cooper , of Ross , obtained the first prize , and Florence Oliver , of Goodrich , the second , both successful candidates being pupils of Miss Yorath . Master Cooper , who is only 11 years of age , was also successful
winning the second prize in the recent Bristol Eisteddfod .

Ross Musical Demonstration
SUCCESSFUL BAND AND CHOIR CONTESTS . The committee and all concerned are be congratulated on the success of th second annual Ross Musical Demonstratio which was held on Broad Meadows , Ros on Whit - Monday , and attracted a ve large crowd of people . During the mornin several excursions were run to Ross fro all parts , bringing in many visitors and fo lowers of the competing bands . The crow on Broad Meadows was easily one of t biggest gatherings of people seen in Ro for several years , and with the music programme provided by the committee ever one present spent an enjoyable afternod and evening . In addition to the contest Mr. Clifton Hill provided a varied assor ment of amusements , including Marsha Hill's cinema , and during the evening th ground was crowded with pleasure - seeker all of whom were apparently enjoying th delights of the fair . Fortunately fine weathe prevailed . and the demonstration may considered a great success .
Col. O , R. Middleton was the presider and through the generosity of a numb of vice - presidents and other supporters , committee were enabled to offer nearly £ 5 as prizes . Some disappointment was e pressed that only four hands and two choi competed in the contests , but this certain had its advantages in making the compet tions less monotonous , while the enterpri ing committee arranged other selections an part - songs to . be rendered by the variou bands and the choirs , so that altogethe the crowd rather appreciated the fact tha the entries were not very numerous . Th bands competing were Aber Valley Silve Band ( conducted by Mr. S. Radcliffe ) Blaina Lancaster Town Band , the 3rd Mon mouth Battalion Band ( Abertillery . ducted by Mr. T. Valentine ) -which ar three of the principal Welsh brass band -and Yorkley Onward ( conducted by Mr Angus Holder ) . The prizes in the ban contest were £ 18 , £ 8 , and £ 3 , with a silve medal for the best euphonium soloist . Th test piece was P. E. Fletcher's ' Labour and Love , " a tone poem , which was the test piece at last year's Crystal Palace contests Cinderford and Ruardean Hill were the onl two choirs to compete in the male - voice con test , for a first prize of £ 14 and a secon of £ 4 . Foxwell's " Destruction of . Gaza was the test . The adiudicator was Mr Frank Owen . L.L.C.M .. of Manchester .
BAND PARADE .
con
The first contest was the band parad from the Swan Hotel Corner , each ban playing a march of its own selection . After wards the four bands played a march from the Railway Hotel to the ground . Th prize of £ 1 for the best rendered march wa awarded to Aber Valley .
BAND CONTEST . Owing to the absence of one of their sol players . Yorkley decided not to compete in the contest , leaving the result to the three Welsh bands , who gave finely coloured ren derings of the test . but Aber Valley un doubtedly gave the best interpretation o the music , altogether giving a very fin rendering . The Aber Valley euphonium soloist was also awarded the silver meda for the best rendered solo . The 3rd Mon mouth Battalion Band were placed second According to the opinion of Mr. Parr Jones , of Shrewsbury . " Garthowen " of th " British Bandsman , " who was present a the demonstration , the contest was of a first class character , the bands competing bein three of the most prominent in Wales . In making his adjudication on the parad and the march . Mr. Frank Owen said h was sorry the entry was so small , yet s the same time he must say that the playin in the march by all four bands was ver good . He congratulated the bands on th marches selected , for the pieces played wer not above them , and were such as the could get the most out of . He had no thing to say with regard to the marche as to whether they were difficult or not but he must say there was very little t choose between two or three of the hands He thought , however , that the prize shoul go to the band that played third - Abe Valley ( applause ) . In the selection , oiofb Valley ( applause ) . Speaking of the selec tion , Mr. Owen said if they had not th quantity they certainly had the quality o playing , and the performances by all thre bands , particularly two of them were re markably good . The test - piece did not cal forth that hard blowing which they had i so many brass band pieces , was of a ver artistic setting , and all the bands should b much better for having rehearsed the piece The idea of the piece was well sustained and to his mind the renderings on the whol were very creditable . The first prize and also the medal for the best euphonium sol he awarded to the same band - Aber Valle ( applause ) . The second prize he awarded t the 3rd Monmouth Battalion Band .
Several selections of music were after wards played by the bands , and the Ruar dean Hill and Cinderford choirs also ren dered part - songs , which were followed b MALE - VOICE CONTEST .
the
Both choirs gave creditable rendering of a difficult test , but Mr. Owen , in givin his adjudication , found fault with the pr duction in both choirs on some passage although on the whole the voices in bot Mr. Owen also con choirs were good . sidered both choirs did not put the righ interpretation on several of the passages especially the opening , so that parts of th test were marred by the lack of proper ex pression . The first prize he awarded to th first choir ( Cinderford ) , with 77 marks , whil the other choir ( Ruardean Hill ) obtained 7 marks . Before the adjudication the tw choirs were massed , and gave a further ren dering of the test piece under the conduc torship of Mr. Owen .
Mr. E. Passey acted in the capacity of treasurer , and Mr. Bert Restall as chairma of the committee . Mr. W. Langford an Mr. R. E. Oliff . the joint hon . secs . , an deserving of the highest commendation fo the very satisfactory way they accomplishe their arduous work .

LIST OF THE PRIZE - WINNERS . The second Hereford Eisteddfod was hol at the Shirehall , Hereford , on Bank Hol day , and was fairly well attended . Unf tunately Abersychan . last year's winners the chief choral , withdrew owing to the i ness of their conductor , and Hereford Ha Herefor monic therefore had a walk over . was second last year . The results were : - Juvenile choirs ( fifteen to twenty - fi voices , open ) , " A Sea Song " ( Ivor Atkins -1 , Weston - under - Penyard choir , near Ros 80 points ; 2 , Hereford Highlanders Juni Choir , 76 ; Hereford St. James's Unit Choir and Hereford Eignbrook Junior Cho equal 72. Speaking of the Weston - unde Penyard Choir , the Adjudicator said th they did not take the piece so quickly as t other choirs , and they at once showed sweet tone and displayed qualities which a pealed to the musical sense . There was bounding rythm here , but it had curves a showed rather wave of accent than blo of accent . There was also pleasing relief the piano and the accent was fair . Th was not the vitality displayed by the Ei brook Choir , but there was a distinct mu cal appeal . The " Highlanders " -whom humorously observed he had expected to in kilts had a nice musical tone and d played obvious voice culture . There was unity of quality and a charming delic which made a musical appeal . Later however , they got a little out of tune little flat . The words were fair . but t
