questioning prisoner said he came along the footpath to the stile and then up above the stile and the farm . I told him that I did not believe him , and that I should arrest him for setting fire to the rick . After cautioning him , Williams said : " You have got the wrong man . I would not do Mr. Protheroe any harm . If you will let me go , I will go home and say no more about it . " I told him I should take him to Ross , and he then resisted apprehension . When I search- ed him I found a box of matches in his pos- session , also a small piece of candle , and . several dead matches in his waistcoat pocket . In his further evidence the constable said he asked prisoner if he knew whether his mother or his brother knew anything about the fire , and Williams replied : " No , they don't know anything . They don't know I am here . " Williams also said : " I do not smoke . I have been burning cutch this morning . " Continuing , the constable cor- roborated the evidence of Supt . Broad as to the distinct footprints in the shed and across the 50 acres field . Those footmarks could not have been made according to the ac- count of prisoner as to his movements .

TRESPASSING ON THE RAILWAY . Emma Lane , of Welsh Bicknor , was charg- ed with trespassing on the railway at Welsh Bicknor on May 10th last . Mr. E. , A. Capel , solicitor , Hereford , ap- peared to prosecute on behalf of the Great Western Railway Company . He pointed out the section of the Act under which the defen- dant was charged , and pointed out that the spot at which the defendant was trespassing was only ninety yards from the mouth of the tunnel , and therefore was very danger- ous . There was also a ferry a little distance away , and therefore there was no excuse for trespassing on the line . He did not wish to press for a heavy penalty , but the company wished to put a stop to this practice . Henry Raymond , an employe of the Great Western Railway Co. , said he was stationed on the railway at this bridge just outside the tunnel at Welsh Bicknor , when he saw the defendant get on to the line and commence to go across the bridge . He asked her her name and address , and he also called her at- tention to the notice board by the bridge . Mr. Thomas Wheatley , of Leanesbrook , presided over a considérable gathering of fisherman , who passed a resolution calling on the conservators to afford more protection of their interests at Awre .
