On Saturday night , about 9.45 . the Ross fire hell was rung , giving an alarm of a fire that had oc- curred at Rock Farm , Ballingham , in the occupation of Mr. W. H. Hillyard . A cot- tage , which was used as a store , and a shed . were involved . The contents of the cottage . were destroyed , and the cottage itself was considerably damaged . Both the Ross bri- Rev. L. P. Beeks ) were summoned , but on the arrival of the Ross brigade some- thing went wrong with the engine , and they were unable to get to work . The city brigade , with their large manual , soon got to work , and they directed their attention to the adjoining buildings to prevent the flames from spreading . Both brigades worked strenuously until the small hours of the morning . The cause of the fire is unknown , and it would be difficult to estimate the damage done . BRAMPTON ABBOTTS . DEATH OF MR . JOHN TURNER . Many of our readers will learn with great regret of the death of Mr. John Turner . of the Post Office , Brampton Abbotts , which occurred on Saturday evening last , at the age of 60 years . For several weeks Mr. Turner had been seriously ill , and his death was really not unexpected . For over 40 years the deceased was in the employ of Messrs . When the Ross Row- ing Club was first instituted . Mr. Turner he- came a member , and also a fine oarsman . He was a man of quiet disposition , and was es- teemed and respected by all who knew him . The funeral took place in Brampton Church- vard this ( Wednesday ) afternoon , and was largely attended . HOARWITHY . CHURCH PARADE - On Sunday last the picturesque village of Hoarwithy was gnite a military centre , the Army Service Corps meeting there for a church parade . number- ing 70 N.C. Officers and men , under Capt . Hill , who commands the Headquarter Com- pany of the A.S.C. He was accompanied by Capt . E. W. Caddick and Lieut . Vaughan WALFORD . DAMAGING MOWING GRASS At Littledean Police Court on Friday last , Wil- liam Tyler , Edwin Harris , Stanley Lewis , Hubert Harris , were summoned by P.O. Wiltshire for causing wilful damage to the extent of 5s . to mowing grass , the property of Gilbert Matthews , farmer , Ruardean , on May 31st . Defendants belong to Howle Hill , and are farm labourers . - Tyler was also sum moned by P.C. Wiltshire for using abusive language on the same date.-Mr. Matthews said he saw defendants in the grass . Three were lying down asleep , and the other one was walking about . He went to them and complained , and was abused by one of them . They refused their names and addesses . Since then two of the defendants had made an offer to pay for the damage done . - The ccn- stable said Tyler and all of them refused to say who they were or where they lived . They were recovering from drink . People going by could hear the language used The four defendants were fined on the first charge 5s . and 10s . costs each . For using bad language Tyler was fined a further бs . The Corps included the local section from Harewood End and Hereford . who were headed by their own band . from Leominster . which is only a recent addition to the Corps ; they are most efficient , and were greatly ap- preciated by all . The Company marched from the field to the church where a very bright service was conducted by the Rev. D. R. Evans , Vicar of the parish . The church filled to overflowing , and many had to re- main outside . After service , they again marched to the field , when Capt . Hill com- plimented the men on the way they had turned out , especially the band . which had come so far . They again marched up the village to the Reading Room , where an ex- cellent meat tea was provided by Messrs . Williams and Mailes . Afterwards , Staff Sergt . - Major A. J. Lewis gave each man a packet of cigarettes , the kind gift of F. G. Fry , Esq . Needless to say , his kind thought DEATH OF THE RECTOR OF A88 WHITCHURCH . For some We regret to announce the death of the Rev. C. J. Bradshaw , Rector of Whitchurch , near Ross , who had only served the parish as Rector for barely two years . months past , the Rev. Bradshaw has not en- joyed the best of health ; but it was only quite recently that he was unable to take his duties , and death occurred at the Rectory , Whitchurch , on Thursday last . The Rev. Charles James Bradshaw , of Christ College , Cambridge , M.A. , was or- dained deacon in 1882 and priest in 1883 . He has held curacies at St. Cuthbert Wells from 1882 to 1885 ; Macclesfield . 1885-87 ; St. John the Baptist , Leamington , 1887-88 ; Brereton ( Cheshire ) , 1888 90 ; Oranworth ( Norfolk ) , 1890-93 ; and St. John the Bap- tist , Kidderminster , 1893-95 . In 1895 he accepted the living of Holy Trinity Church , Bollington .
