Valentine ) -which are three of the principal Welsh brass bands -and Yorkley Onward ( conducted by Mr. Angus Holder ) . The prizes in the band contest were £ 18 , £ 8 , and 28 , with a silver medal for the best euphonium soloist . The test piece was P. E. Fletcher's ' Labour and Love , " a tone poem , which was the test- piece at last year's Orystal Palace contests . Cinderford and Ruardean Hill were the only two choirs to compete in the male - voice con- test , for a first prize of £ 14 and a second of £ 4 . Foxwell's " Destruction of Gaza " was the test . The adiudicator was Mr. Frank Owen , L.L.U.M. , of Manchester . BAND PARADE . The prize of £ 1 for the best rendered march was awarded to Aber Valley . BAND CONTEST . Owing to the absence of one of their solo players . Yorkley decided not to compete in the contest , leaving the result to the three Welsh bands , who gave finely coloured ren- derings of the test , but Aber Valley un- doubtedly gave the best interpretation of the music , altogether giving a very fine rendering . The Aber Valley euphonium soloist was also awarded the silver medal for the best rendered solo . The 3rd Mon- mouth Battalion Band were placed second . According to the opinion of Mr. Parry Jones , of Shrewsbury . " Garthowen " of the " British Bandsman , " who was present at the demonstration , the contest was of a first- three of the most prominent in Wales . In making his adjudication on the parade . and the march . Mr. Frank Owen said he was sorry the entry was so small , yet at the same time he must say that the playing in the march by all four bands was very good . He congratulated the bands on the marches selected , for the pieces played were not above them , and were such as they could get the most out of . He had no- thing to say with regard to the marches as to whether they were difficult or not , but he must say there was very little to choose between two or three of the bands . Oak Apple Day , the 29th of May , is pro- bably the day of all days in the year so far as the village of Whitchurch is concerned , for it is what is known as the Village Club Fete Day . This year , however , the weather was very stormy , and during the greater portion of the afternoon and evening rain fell somewhat heavily and so marred the proceedings . The fete is held in conjunc- tion with the " Old Court " Lodge , No. 214 , of the Merthyr Unity Philanthropic Institu- tion , which has its headquarters at the After the dinner , great amusement was Crown Inn . The balance sheet , issued by the " Old Court " Lodge , showed that during the year sick pay had been paid to twelve members accounting for £ 31 14s . 8d . , while £ 12 7s . 6d . had been paid from the funeral fund , leav- ing a balance on the benefit fund of £ 2 19s . 81d . On the total funds of the lodge the amount given as in bank was £ 310 148. 1 d . on mortgage £ 110 ; and with a balance of £ 7 4s , 7d . , making a total of £ 427 18s . 8d . , as compared with £ 419 14s . 5d . for 1912 , showing an increase on the year of £ 8 4s . 8d . The donations to the anniversary came to £ 9 12s . 6d . AFTER DINNER SPEECHES . After all present had enjoyed a thoroughly mencing on the toast list , proposed that the good dinner , the CHAIRMAN , before com- members of the lodge should convey to the Rev. Francis Crombie a very hearty vote of thanks for coming over that morning and conducting the service in the unavoidable absence of their own Rector , whose health was not quite as perhaps they all wished it might be . Mr. HENRY WEBB " supported , saying they were greatly indebted to the Rev. a single word in his sermon that he ( Mr. Webb ) disagreed with ( applause ) . The idea of the piece was well sustained , and to his mind the renderings on the whole were very creditable . The first prize and also the medal for the best euphonium solo he awarded to the same band - Aber Valley ( applause ) . That society was one of the oldest in the district , having been instituted in the year 1841 , and since they they had al- ways been in a sound position . This year some of the old members had died . society's receipts , however , came to £ 25 88. 8d . , and their expenditure to £ 16 168 . Od . , leaving in the box on May 14th , 1914 , £ 8 12s . 8d . They had in the bank £ 40 12s . 1d . , and that with interest came to £ 49 19s . 9d . This year they divided up their money . After leaving £ 20 in the bank and paying £ 12 at the death of some old mem- bers and all other expenses , it left some £ 30 to be divided among the members ( applause ) . Mr. BANCHINI submitted the health of " The Chairman , " and said what a keen in- terest Mr. Brown took in all matters apper taining to the welfare of the parish , and the esteem in which he was held by all who resided in the district , to which the Chair- man briefly replied .
