Oh, good day to you and welcome to Saint Catharine's Hospital. I am Hugh Folliot. Bishop of Hereford, and the hospital is here because of me. I founded Saint Catharine's in the year of our Lord 1231. The hospital brethren care for the poor and needy of Ledbubury as Jesus taught us to do. They give them food and shelter and do what they can to make them comfortable. I founded Saint Catharine's because as a bishop, it is important that I set an example to everyone else. Also, I am an old man now and don't have much time left in this world. When I stand before God and He judges my soul, I trust that He will remember the good that I have done here. Running a hospital isn't easy, but fortunately, we have many loyal supporters. Wealthy local families have given us land which will provide us with an income for many years. In return, our chantry priests pray for our benefactors' souls, as they do for mine. But it isn't just great lords and ladies who help us. Ordinary people give what they can, even if it's just one or two coins to light a candle in the chapel. It all helps to keep the hospital's doors open. No doubt there are still many people in your time who need help. When you leave here, remember the good that we have done at Saint Catharine's Hospital. Farewell |
