Remembering Herefordshire's fallen

On the morning of VE Day the Mayor led a solemn procession to lay a wreath at the cenotaph in memory of those who had given their lives. Tony Williams, working on behalf of the Hereford Bulletin and Citizen, discreetly photographed the proceedings, which underpinned the less restrained commemoration that was to ensue. It served to set the day in perspective - the value of the deliverance made all the greater by the cost of the sacrifice. The following day, the same civic party processed to Hereford Cathedral, where a service of thanksgiving was held.

We are grateful to Derek Foxton for letting us use his digital copies of these historic images.
