Description | Boy at the Fownhope Heart of Oak Club walk. In its celebration of Oak Apple Day, the Club's walk was a colourful spectacle. Men and boys only in those days, while women and girls could only watch from the sidelines (even if they were sometimes responsible for creating the decorated stick). The sticks, onto which the floral blooms are tied, were are often considered family heirlooms and are passed down the generations. A variation of this photo appeared in the Sunday Times of June 7th the same year. |
