MORE LETTERS FROM FRANCE . A. BIG MAIL : SMILING FACES . BOYS BUCKED UP BY GOOD THINGS FROM HOME . In our last issue we published a wide selection of letters from Leominster men , thanking the subscribers to the Mayor's tund for sending presents to men from the town who are overseas . By every subsequent post the Mayor has been deluged with further re- plies , all couched in terms of warm apprecia- of the thought which prompted the organisation of the fund . The pleasantness of the surprise with which many men received a parcel from the old town is well expressed by Sergt . G. R. Preece , Royal Dublin Fusiliers , who addresses Coun- cillor Dowding as " Mayor of Good Old Leo- minster He writes : It was with great sur- prise and a feeling of very sincere appreciation that I discovered , on delving to the bottom of a parcel which arrived this morning , a card wishing me " Good Luck " from the Subscrib- ers of the Leominster Christmas Presents Fund . For although I knew of the efforts being made at your instigation , to supply parcels to Leominster lads , it never occurred to me that I should be among the recipients , for it is now more that twelve years since I left the old town . Arriving as it has done on the heels of a spell of tough fighting , march- ing and trench duty , makes the parcel doubly welcome , for whenever there is " activity on the Western Front " it is usual for one's stock of personal comforts to get used up or maybe lost . Our mail to - day is a big one and there are many smiling faces to be seen , faces which yesterday showed nought but gloom in some cases . Letters and parcels from " home " have an unfailing knack of bucking up all who receive them and to - night if you could stroll into our billets you would find groups sitting round fires " drumming up " coffee and cocoa , tucking with rare gusto into all the good things sent by the good old home - folk and hear one and all exclaim " We're três bon . " Therefore , all honour and thanks to the senders of parcels for they bring brightness and a breath of home into a land of desolation and ruin . May I wish you every success during your year of office , and a Merry Christmas to Leominster generally ? Pte . W. Kitson writes : I wish you to accept many thanks for the parcel which I received from you on December 15th . I must mention that the contents were very , acceptable . Pte . G. H. Walton writes : I am writing to thank you most kindly for the parcel I re- ceived from you on the 17th which I enjoyed and appreciated very much and hoping that you will also thank the subscribers from me , as it came with great cheer and it also re- minded me of the old town . Corpl . A. E. James writes : Please accept and convey to the subscribers of the parcel I have received from your , my grateful thanks and reciprocation of the good wishes sent . The contents of the parcel were ripping and arrived in good condition . Pte . J. H. Powell writes : Just a few lines to thank you and the subscribers of the Leomin- ster Christmas Presents Fund for sending me the parcel which I received quite sately . Sapper A. E. Davies writes : Just a few lines to thank you and the subscribers of Leominster for the parcel which I received quite safe and in good condition . I think the lads of Leominster ought to be pleased to think that there is someone thinking of them while they are in France and other places abroad . I am expecting a leave and I will come round and see you . Pte . H. Hall writes : Please accept my thanks for the nice parcel which I received quite safe on the 14th inst . , and I also wish to thank all those who so willingly subscribed . I am sure all the lads will appreciate the parcels very much . Once again thanking you all for your kindness . Pte . J. Mann says : I am writing to acknow- ledge the parcel I received safely , the contents . of which were very acceptable . Please accept my sincere thanks . " Will you Staff Sergeant Taylor writes : please tender my gratitude which is more than thanks to the members of your fund for the parcel of good and useful things received to- day . At times like these one much appreci- ates the kindly thoughts of others . I sincerely hope that the time is not far off when we shall all once again be at peace . " Pte . Arthur Williams , Canadians , writes : All the little manitos of mischief beset the path of my military correspondence , in fact the submarine has nothing on them . On September 3rd he visited BASKETI , you can do so by an outlay of ago . I do not aspire to being an interesting quill driver , but I would like to try and convey to you the sincere appreciation of my chums and myself for the generous token of good will that the members of the home town Xmas Present Fund have tendered to me . he sandwiched amid the crudities of military existence , but the pleasure is nil in comparison to the knowledge that good folk o'er in Blighty are not forgetting we tin - hatted strategists . Such assurances go a long way with us lads and no matter what the future has in store for us we know that our little " bit " has not been in vain . May I take this opportunity of extending congratulations on your late appointment as Mayor of Leomin- ster . Wishing you this coming festive season a merry Xmas and happy New Year . Sergeant A. 1. Kent - Phillips , M.T. , A.S.C. , writes : It is with great pleasure that I acknowledge the receipt of the Christmas par- cel which reached me this evening , and I can honestly assure you that the contents will the kindness of yourself and the kind friends prove most useful and I greatly appreciate who have so kindly thought of us out here , but although far away my thoughts will be in dear old Leominster this Xmas time whilst making the best of things out here , and I trust we shall all be back in dear old Blighty again under far happier circumstances than the present before another Xmas round . I must not tell you any news , though probably you at home know more about what is happening than we do , as our knowledge is confined to our immediate front . The weather is not very good , but we have had no snow yet , for which we are very thankful . The mud is quite sufficient , of which we have plenty . Again thanking you for the parcel and hoping this will find you in the best of health , as I am pleased to say it leaves me . comes Pte . A. C. Millward writes : Would you kindly accept this letter and Xmas card as a small token of thanks for the thoughtful and good spirit which you have shown for the lads of Leominster who are doing their bit for the old country ? I am sure all the lads of Leo- minster will agree with me when I say that I don't think any one man has done so much for the lads of Leominster that has been done by you this Xmastide , of course I don't mean to say that nothing else is done for either Tommy or Jack , because I know there is a never ceasing variety of various things being sent by the people of Leominster for the bene- fit of Tommy and Jack . I must ask you to thank the people who worked so hard to get together the funds for such a great cause . I expect by the time you get this letter it will be the ending of another year and still at war . This war reminds me of the long lane without a turning , but of course we must cheer up as there is bound to be an ending , although we can't yet see it . Well , sir , I must close now as time is rather precious at present , so I will close hoping that your true patriotic spirit will long be remembered . Pte . L. G. Clarke writes : I have the pleasure of writing to you thanking you for your great kindness and the different things which you sent in the parcel , which will be very useful to me , such as the drying towel and soap , also the scarf which is very handy for putting on at night seeing that it is so very cold out here , also the eatables were very acceptable , such as the fish and cake . I also enoyed the other eatables , in fact I enjoyed it Seeing that I am the only lad very much . from Leominster in this battalion I think it is very kind of you . Dear sir , I should like to be remembered to Mr. and Mrs. Palmer if you get the opportunity of speaking to them at any time . Mr. T. Pugh , High Street , Leominster , has Driver L. Cole , A.S.C. writes : Having re - informed the Mayor that his son has written ceived the parcel from you , I wish to thank you to say that he received a parcel safely and in good condition . and the subscribers to the Leominster Christ- mas Presents Fund for the contents , which I found very useful .
