young Greek seaman named Benkentis , who had indignantly refused , and the dentist had had been paying attentions to the girl for then called a policenian to put her out .. some time past , stabbed her to death in the street in a fit of jealousy , after demanding the return of his letters and a ring . As the girl was going off to fetch the letters , a companion said Benkentis walked behind her and struck her , as the witness thought ; with a stick . The weapon was produced in court , a long knife , not unlike a butcher's knife , with a wooden handle .
A doctor's narrative to the court indicated
with , what fury she had been attacked . The jury returned a verdict of wilful murder against the accused .
That was so far good , but , the applicant plaintively told the magistrate , that , without her teeth , she could not eat , and she had now been a whole week without a meal .
" I cannot go on fasting much longer , " she exclained .
The sympathetic magistrate advised her to make another application to the dentist , and , if she did not get her teeth back . to came , to the court again .
