HON , FRANK CHARTERIS , R.E. , who is building in a secluded part of his estate a new aerial machine for the use of the British Navy .
CAPTAIN MARK GRENNAN , his close friend , commander of the cruiser which is a patrol - boat in the North Sea , living in anxious days in the knowledge that the most terrible war of modern times might be declared at any moment . ROSE HOWARD - VANCE , his fiancée .
SYLVIA VAN ANNAN , her friend and guest , a lovely girl belonging to a wealthy Dutch family . She captivates Charteris at first sight , and a hunting accident is the in- strument of her first fisit to Corford Hall , Mr. Charteris's beautiful home by the sea . As they are passing the aerial shed the new machine rises in the air , and Miss Van Annan displayes an emotion which greatly bewilders her host .
Next morn-
ing footprints are found around the aerial shed , one of them that of a lady . Charteris is disturbed by this , and the strange agitation of the girl with whom he has fallen in love , when a line of battleships appears off the coast .
CHAPTER VIII .
Captain Grennan and Charteris walked with the ladies back to Shale Castle after the lunch at the club - house ; they went by a route which was out of the question for wheeled vehicles , crossing first of all the sand - dunes , which ran for two miles or more along the ridge over- looking the sea ; then they turned into a narrow lane overhung by arching trees , whose bratches almost interlaced from opposite sides of the way , while the hedges were some seven or eight feet high on either - hand . At first , while crossing the dunes , they had all walked together , but in the lane this was impossible .. Grennan was

But with reference to your central proposition , I am afraid it would hardly pay to let the whole world know exactly what we are doing - in naval matters , for instance . As it is , both Charteris and I know perfectly well that if it were possible to wreck his new invention , not a few people would risk a great deal to accomplish it . "
" If you think that , of course he is right to guard it to the utmost of his power . "
" I not only think , but I know it . '
As he spoke Grennan looked towards the sea , which was plainly visible from the high ground on which the castle was built . Across .
