LEATHER RESTRICTIONS
The immense quantity of leather required for military purposes has resulted in a serious shortage of stocks available for the civilian trade . Manufacturers also are unable to cope with the demands of the public as they are occupied with work for the Allied armies .
A great scarcity of Footwear is inevitable and we therefore remind you of the necessity for preparedness .
Our stocks represent the pick of the market to - day and you will feadily understand that , they cannot be replaced at present prices , if at all . A call at our premises in HIGH STREET will convince you that better value is unobtainable .

WHY ACRICULTURE WAS INCLUDED .
A meeting in connection with National Ser- vice was held at Hereford under the presidency of the Lord Lieutenant on Wednesday , ( Sir John Cotterell , ) who said it had puzzled him . and others why agriculture should included in the scheme . be
Herefordshire , which was almost entirely de- In a county like voted to agriculture , it was not a question of sending men away to work elsewhere , but of getting other people into it to work on the land , and it seemed to . him that much , clerical labour could have been avoided . ( Hear , hear . ) Mr. Sandford , of Birmingham , replied that once an industry was placed ouside the scheme other national and essential industries would . agitate for exemption . The idea was to have
a full classification and , if necesary , to transfer labour from one part to another where it would be more useful and profitable ...

An amazing story of a army absentees was related magistrates on Wednesday . George E. Barker , the keeper of a cycle shop , was charged with maintaining an underground chamber for the purpose of harbouring persons liable for military service .
Accused had premises on the south side of Bristol , where the formation below the soil is formed of red sandstone . It is comparatively
g
easy to cut passages in this material , which is hard enough to stand without support . The allegation was that in a dry well means of descent had been provided by insert- ing pieces of projecting wood in apertures in the masonry . From this well had been cut . a passage leading to a chamber about 6ft .. square , also carved in the sandstone .
W. W. BECK , by an electric conductor and a bell .

HORSE FLESH . AS ENGLISH BEEF . At the London Mansion House on Wednes- day , Alfred Maskell ( 60 ) , butcher , of Long Lane , Bermondsey , was sent to three months ' hard labour for obtaining and attempting to to obtain money by fraud in connection with the sale of horse flesh as English home - killed beef . According to prisoner , he bought the meat from a Belgian horse slaughterer licensed
to kill for human consumption , in Lambeth , at 6d . per Ib . , and offered it for sale himself at 1s . 3d . per lb.
" This is a most nefarious trade , " remarked the Lord Mayor , " trying to make people to beef , and , indeed , a serious thing for traders eat horse flesh in the belief that it is English , who may run a risk of losing their customers in consequence . "
