Black and white postcard entitled "OLD MARKET HALL, ROSS" The photgraph is overexposed making it dark and difficult to make out certain details. On the right-hand side of the facing wall of the Market House at ground level is a pillar letter box (the small white square is most likely to be the collection times notice). Prior to 1904, it had been postioned further out in the road. To the left of and behind the Market House in what is Market Place, is a shop sign saying "10 Sacret 10". This shop was run by a Mr. Ernest. S. Sacret who advertised his business in the Ross Gazette as an "Up-to-date" Draper and Furnisher. It occupied 9, 10, 11 & 12 Market Place from late-1900 to late-1910. This photograph, therefore, must have been taken sometime between 1904 and 1910. High above the road on the right is a sign "Smith & Watson". This was an ironmongers shop at 39 High Street. RELATED ITEMS IN THE HEREFORDSHIRE HISTORY COLLECTION. This contains a postcard catalogued as "1071 Ross-on-Wye Market Hall" which shows the position of the pillar letter box before it was moved nearer to the Market House in 1904. |
