8 G.R. G.R. Herefordshire Volunteer Regt . THE King's Call FOR Volunteers . 66 am confident that all who are now prevented from undertaking active service abroad will join the Volun- teers and show to our enemies that my subjects of ALL AGES are ready to serve in the de- fence of our beloved country . " LORD FRENCH says : The whole duty of Home Defence may have to be undertaken by the Volunteers . " More Volunteers are required for Home Defence , to release Troops for the Front . Every Efficient Volunteer Who is ready to take over the duties of Home Defence in case of in- vasion becoming imminent , releases a trained soldier for the Front . NO MAN WHO IS REASONABLY ACTIVE can conscientiously refuse such a small ser- vice , if he thinks of all that the men at the front are giving and risking every day of the week - Sundays included . The Volunteer Force and National Service . The position under National Service of those who enter into engagements by join- ing various sections of the Volunteer . Force has been considered by the Director General , in consultation with the military authorities ; and the following pronouncement is issued officially from Mr. Neville Chamberlain's de- partment : " Those in volunteer corps who undertake specified service as detailed below are not ex- pected to enrol under the National Service . Scheme , viz . : ( a ) Any member of a volunteer corps who can produce a certificate showing that he belongs to Section A of the Volunteer Force . ( b ) Any member of a volunteer corps who agrees to undertake temporary service when called upon for a certain number of hours or days per week . " All other officers or members of volunteer corps who do not come under categories ( A ) or ( B ) as above should enrol under the National Service scheme , when , if they are moved from one district to another , efforts will be made in conjunction with the military authorities to transfer them from their present volunteer corps to another corps in their new district . " ( Section A. Men over military age who agree to do so , many drills each month ) . THOUSANDS OF BRAVE LADS From Herefordshire are fighting for you across the seas , how can you refuse this call to defend the homes and families they have left behind ? ENGLAND EXPECTS ! Herefordshire to raise two battalions of 1,000 Volunteers each . The adjoining counties of Worcestershire and Shropshire have raised respectively , three and two battalions . Herefordshire to be found wanting ? Will you be a Volunteer , and enjoy the satisfaction of knowing that you are doing your bit ? Your King Calls You in Uncertain Voice . Is CORRESPONDENCE . THE KINGTON TIMES . MARCH 17. 1917 . THE EDITOR DOES NOT HOLD HIMSELF RESPON- SIBLE FOR THE OPINIONS EXPRESSED BY HIS CORRESPONDENTS . ALL COMMUNICATIONS FOR PUBLICATION MUST BE ACCOMPANIED BY THE NAME AND ADDRESS OF THE SENDER , NOT NECESSARILY FOR PUBLICATION . BUT AS A GUAR- ANTEE OF GOOD FAITH . FOOD PRODUCTION . LEOMINSTER NOTES . The Matron of the Leominster Cottage Hos- pital returns thanks for the following gifts re- ceived during the past fortnight : Eggs , Miss Wood and Mrs. Heygate ; magazines , Colonel Davidson ; cake , Miss Morgan ; vegetables , Mr. Rome • On the authority of Councillor Southall the public will be pleased to note that the baro- meter yesterday was higher than it has been since the 31st of January , 1916. Both for the sake of our forces on the Western Front and for the farmers and gardeners who are vigor- ously attacking the question of Food Produc tion we hope this is a prelude to a period of improved weather . To the Editor of the Kington Times . Dear Sir , I have received a large number of applications for seed potatoes during the last few days . When I advertised potatoes first it was clearly stated that orders were to be in by January 20th , two months ago , and if or- ders had been sent then , we could have ordered a sufficient quantity to meet all requirements . All the potatoes at the Committee's disposal are now ordered . It appears that the Com- mittee has not been sent the full amount or- dered and also the severe weather has affected a portion . The Committee are thereiore to the Boy Scouts for their services in under- obliged to retain a sufficient quantity to plant taking the collection on Monday , the 5th all the plots on the Corporation land in Stock - inst . ton Road . As there is a great scarcity of seed potatoes I would suggest that people who are now using table potatoes and who require a supply of seed should cut off the tubers he rose end containing the eyes . This piece , which should weigh about 1 ounces , should be reserved for seed and the remainder eaten . To prevent bleeding , the raw surface of the seed shouid be dipped in hot lime or plaster of Paris trouble , but it is worth all the trouble to This may appear to give a great deal of secure a good supply of seed potatoes . This method is being followed all over the country and my authority is an expert from the King's Acre Nurseries , Hereford , and in the " Farm and Field " there is an article on the same subject . I have no doubt in my own mind that we shall have bread tickets in a very short time and vegetables , because money will not buy and God help the people who have no potatoes bread then . Mrs. Frank Russell wishes to thank all those who contributed to the Paper Collection for Sarnesfield Red Cross Hospital . Nearly a ton of paper was collected in Leominster and neighbourhood . Also special thanks are due • The meetings in connection with Home Mis- sions held during last month in the country churches of the Leominster Wesleyan Circuit , were on the whole very successful . At some the Rev. W. H. Rolls was deputation and in- terested the people with his stories from his own experience in city mission work . At two places the Revs . J. Č . Elder and H. S. Millward gave addresses , which were distinctly two places , showed an increase on last year . encouraging . The financial results , apart from two Gifts to the Navy Stall in Leominster Mar- ket are gratefully acknowledged as follows : March 2 , A Friend , Colonel T. W. Prime Minister's Appeal For Fullest Fullest Energies in the Production of Wheat , DEAR SIR , Oats and Potatoes . 10 , DOWNING STREET , WHITEHALL , S.W. March , 1917 . We have now reached a crisis in the War when to ensure victory , the heroism of our armies at the Front must be backed by the self - sacrifice and tireless labour of everyone at home . To this end the production of each quarter of Wheat and Oats and of each bushel of Potatoes is of vital importance . The Work of the Next Few Weeks must decide the Harvest of the Year , and in the Nation's interest I urge you , at whatever personal sacrifice , to overcome all obstacles , to throw your fullest energies into the work , and to influence and encourage all who assist you , so that every possible acre shall be sown . The imperative demands of the War have made it impossible to avoid calling up men fit for active service , even though skilled in farming . As far as possible this is being met by bringing on to the land men and women from other industries . They cannot be ezpected to do work equal to that of men expert in agriculture ; but there is no time for delay and the Government is confident that Farmers will at once step forward and do all in their power to utilise their services to the best advantage . The Farmers of this Country can defeat the German Submarine and when they do so they destroy the last hope of the Prussian , Yours faithfully , D. LLOYD GEORGE .
